Protomartyr tomorrow

Morning all!
Now that our summer has walked into a chillier room we’re following suit with some bracing, acceleratory post punk tomorrow night with PROTOMARTYR, SAUNA YOUTH and FEATURE. The Lexington will be our haunt of choice, expect it to be swept just like a new broom by some genuinely refreshing music from 8.30pm onwards. We only have handful of tickets remaining (think 11) so be advised to buy one in advance if you wish to attend. Read on for all you need to know and check our listings for a second Mississippi Records film/talk/showcase that we’ve newly announced…

PROTOMARTYR play a taut, austere rock that's been incubated in a freezing Detroit warehouse littered with beer cans and cigarette butts and warmed occasionally by space heaters. Short songs made for short practices, and the band learned quickly not to waste time. Despite the cold, Protomartyr emerged with a sound that is idiosyncratic but relatable, hooky but off-kilter. With respect to the local predecessors, this isn’t the primitive stomp of The Dirtbombs or The Stooges’ greasy roar. Punk works, kind of, even if it leaves the hardcore kids confused. Post-punk suggests something too retro; indie rock, something too precious. What Protomartyr is, is “stuck between the cracks.” If that’s the case, though, they aren’t alone. Protomartyr’s economical rock elicits comparisons to possible antecedents like Pere Ubu or The Fall as well as local contemporaries like Frustrations or Tyvek (whose frontman Kevin Boyer played bass in an early iteration of Protomartyr). Singer Joe Casey’s dry declarative snarl serves as a reliable anchor, granting his bandmates (guitarist Greg Ahee, drummer Alex Leonard and bassist Scott Davidson) the opportunity to explore textures and reinforce the rhythm section. In other words, to “fuck around a little bit more.” This is never more apparent than on the band’s excellent sophomore LP on Hardly Art, 'Under Color of Official Right'. Where 2012’s 'No Passion All Technique' favoured comparatively straightforward punk structures, 'Under Color' takes a more exploratory approach and has led to the band coming on tour to Europe for the first time to show us how weird it can get.

SAUNA YOUTH are an evolving band of young future humans making truly irregular punk not quite comparable to anything else. The band, attracted to the possibilities apparent within a DIY philosophy have been self-recording and self-releasing their own music since 2010, creating a number of seven inches, splits and cassettes. Artistic affinities are pledged to Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Pissed Jeans and The Intelligence, but as Kurt Cobain once asked "Why can't we be both Black Sabbath and The Beatles?", Sauna Youth consistently and urgently pose the question, 'Why can't we be both The Ramones and Steve Reich?'. Sauna Youth's debut album, 'Dreamlands' was released in 2012 through Gringo Records and Faux Discx, whilst their most recent 7" 'False Jesii Pt. II' came out last year through Static Shock Records, new album coming soon!http://lostinidea.blogspot.co.uk/

FEATURE are a melodic drone-punk trio from London. They recently released an EP entitled 'Culture of the Copy' on Tye Die Tapes, via cassette and digital download. 'Culture of the Copy' was recorded by Jen and Liv while still a two-piece at Tye Die Tapes HQ in Sheffield in February this year, and features three new songs plus a cover of Supergrass’s pop-hit ‘Caught By The Fuzz’. With Jen also being in Sauna Youth, Feature recently became somewhat of a supergroup when Heather of punk-slackers Slowcoaches joined the band in March of this year.
